RET: At the Heart of Multimodal Logistics on the Upper Rhine
Rhine Europe Terminals (RET) is a subsidiary of the Port Autonome de Strasbourg. RET was created in 2016 to operate the terminals and develop port handling activities.
History :
- 1969 : Inauguration of the South Terminal
- 2004 : Inauguration of the North Terminal
- 2016 : Filialisation and creation of RET, a 100% subsidiary of PAS
- April 2025: Takeover of the Lauterbourg Terminal
The Rhine axis: a strategic location
Located along the Rhine axis, our terminals benefit from direct inland waterway and rail connections to major seaports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Zeebrugge.
RET also has direct, regular rail links to Le Havre, Lyon and Marseille-Fos, among others.

Comprehensive services for all flows
We handle a wide variety of goods. Our infrastructure is adapted to every need:
- Containers: more than 38,000 handling operations per month, or 450,000+ per year!
- Heavy cargo: up to 460 tonnes at the South Terminal and 220 tons in Lauterbourg (crane under maintenance, handling currently carried out by mobile crane).
- Solid bulk: over 48,000 tonnes handled at the Dalhunden site
- Reefers: 40 power outlets for temperature-controlled containers, with dedicated connections distributed across our 3 terminals.
- Swap bodies: easy handling at both of our Strasbourg sites
Our teams also provide container repair, management of full and empty containers, storage, and personalized support for specific logistics projects.
Resources to meet the challenges
RET is proud of its heavy parcel business, which dates back to 1969 and in which it has developed expertise with a gantry crane that lifts loads of up to 460 tonnes in complete safety.
Its terminals are equipped with river and rail gantry cranes, combined with reach stackers, ensuring seamless efficiency. RET has an integrated and proactive maintenance service that guarantees operational continuity. It also relies on an integrated IT management system.
A lasting commitment
RET is actively committed to modal shift, favouring rail and waterways to reduce the environmental impact of transport. By opting for these modes, our customers help to limit road congestion and CO₂ emissions.
- 1 barge = 250 trucks taken off the road
- 1 train = 60 trucks off the road
Our aim: a multimodal offering that plays an active part in the transition to more sustainable and responsible logistics.
Our Technical Department, our key strength
At RET, maintenance goes far beyond simple repairs. One of our strengths is our 5-strong technical team. It guarantees preventive maintenance and a proactive service in anticipation of any breakdown. This enables us to provide our customers with a seamless service and ensure business continuity.
In addition, this approach extends the lifespan of the equipment and enhances safety in the field for both our teams and our customers.
